Why AI-Generated Logos Aren't the Win You Think They Are

Have you been thinking of using a tool like Canva AI, ChatGPT, Claude, or Adobe Express to make a logo for your small business?
These logo creation tools have been piquing the interest of business owners who see them as a quick and cheap path to branding. We get the temptation. But your brand deserves better.
As designers, we see alllll the ways that AI-generated logos can hurt your business.

Is an AI-generated logo enough to brand your small business?
The short answer: nope. A complete visual brand identity requires more than just a logo.
Our brand design clients get responsive logo design, typography, brand colors, and more. We think about brand growth, ensuring that their logo is built to fit their vision and last beyond the startup phase. We also offer guidance on implementing their branding so they can get the most benefit from it.
When you generate a logo with a program like ChatGPT or Canva, it's like ordering an entrée with no sides. In other words, it's incomplete. You could try DIY-ing fonts and colors, but there’s a risk of getting the pairings wrong (much like serving Texas-style ribs with lo mien and green bean casserole on the side).
If our clients need collateral or other design assets, they’re prepared with everything they need, and they have an expert to turn to for help. When you AI your logo? You’re often missing crucial elements and are on your own to figure things out.
Will an AI-generated logo make the same impact as a professionally designed logo?
Working with a professional designer on your branding is an investment because you aren't just paying for a file—you're paying for expertise.
We start a brand design process with a deep dive into your business, target-market research, and competitor research because meaning is where the magic is. Then, informed by strategy, we capture the soul of your brand through hand-crafted design.
AI tools are trained on what’s already out there. So when you ask a tool to create a logo, its first move is to cobble together the most obvious, cliché images related to your business. You’ll get results that are unoriginal and bland because the process doesn’t incorporate strategy and artistry. This generic mark won't stand out or serve you well as your brand grows.

Can you feel the difference in the impact?
Without a human touch, your logo won’t be successful in making your audience feel connected to your brand. Consumers are becoming more discerning by the day as they face a flood of AI-generated logos and content. AI-generated branding can do more harm than good by sparking distrust and sending the message that you didn't care enough to invest.
How easy is it to customize and use an AI-generated logo?
When using AI for your logo, you need to use a well-built tool AND understand how to properly prompt it to get the output you want.
Most tools spit out overly complex images that are hard to modify. If spacing feels too crowded or the colors are just a little bit off, you're either stuck with it or need to start over with a new prompt.
The intricate designs that AI often creates may look nice at first, but can be a nightmare to use. Trying to find a background color with appropriate contrast when you have seven colors in your logo is no small task. And embroidering a complex mark with tiny details and multiple colors on a shirt is a challenge, to say the least.
Another problem is that many AI tools don't allow you to export vectors. Vector files (formats like AI, SVG, and EPS) let you scale your logo to any size without losing image quality. Not having vector files means your logo will load more slowly on websites, you won't be able to edit individual logo elements, and you'll likely end up with blurry results when applying branding to larger areas like signs or vehicle wraps.
Are there legal risks to using an AI-generated logo?
Artificial Intelligence is still wildly unregulated, so the rules are changing all the time. As of the publication of this post, the U.S. Copyright Office has ruled that works lacking human authorship (like purely AI-generated logos) are not eligible for copyright protection.
Canva AI-created logos, for example, cannot be trademarked because there is no way to claim exclusive ownership. Other users could generate and use the exact same logo or something incredibly similar.
It's also important to remember that because AI tools are trained on copyrighted designs, you could unintentionally create a brand mark that's too close to another brand's protected design.
These factors make AI logos a legal and financial risk, since they may require you to scrap your branding and start over.
Your brand should be built to last.
